Medication errors and medical malpractice

On Behalf of | Jul 28, 2020 | Medical Malpractice |

Medical malpractice is a serious issue because patients literally trust doctors with their lives. Negligence has no place in medicine; there is too much at stake. It’s an abuse of people’s trust. Negligence can also result in serious injuries and even death. Residents of Texas need to be informed about medical malpractice errors that could impact their families.

Technology has done wonderful things for health care as improvements in imaging, surgical techniques and medications have made many people’s lives better. But some innovations, no matter how well-intentioned, come with glitches. One example of this can be seen with electronic health records.

In theory, electronic records systems are designed to catch errors made in medication orders. However, a study from the University of Utah in Salt Lake City indicates that this may not be the case. In the study, problematic medication orders known to create problems were entered into electronic health record systems. Then, researchers measured how often the systems noticed the errors. The study lasted for 10 years from 2009 to 2018.

While the study indicated that there was improvement over time, there are still big lapses. In 2009, the average score for hospitals catching errors was 53.9%. By 2018, the average had improved to 65.6%. While that’s an impressive leap, it still reveals a large margin of error. That means that 34% of the time, the errors are not being caught.

If someone has been injured or died due to medical negligence, it may be important for them or their family to seek assistance from an experienced attorney. Attorneys experienced in medical malpractice may help their clients understand if they have a case and guide them through the process of a lawsuit. Such attorneys might be an incredible help during a difficult time.
